We have used a variety of nesting pads in our nesting boxes. However, we have discovered that excelsior pads in our nesting boxes work best. They allow chicken droppings to move down and away from the hens and the eggs.
Finally, chickens usually poop where they sleep; so you may want to consider closing off your coops nesting boxes at night. You can use cardboard, chicken wire, or curtains for this purpose. So these are a few ways in which we keep our chicken egg harvest clean.
