Great tutorial for getting a cheap Linux gaming rig going! I've switched to Linux full time for the last 6 months, and I don't miss Windows one bit.

These older pre-builds are awesome. I bought a $88 low profile HP desktop with i3-4130, 4GB, 120GB SSD a few days ago for a personal home server. My goal was low cost, low power and enough performance to run streaming services. :)

I've been running and gaming in Manjaro KDE for several months now, and its been great, but I use a lot higher end and more expensive machine. Manjaro handles getting nvidia cards running really easy too, just choose the proprietary driver options instead of the open source options for that.

Okay, I've got similar parts at home collecting dust and you've now convinced me to try Manjaro for gaming! 👍

I daily-drove Fedora for around 6 or 7 years. It served me pretty well, but once I got a job administering a couple thousand RHEL systems I quickly needed to find a new daily driver distro. Finally landed on Manjaro and I've loved it so much. My original install is still in perfect working shape! I can't tell you how many times I was up at 2 AM ripping my hair out on a broken Fedora system. Manjaro is a great OS! Plus gaming on it is great

You may have done some content on this before, but I heartedly recommend using Ventoy when creating bootable install media. I have a Ventoy drive with several Linux iso's, windows 10, and windows 7. Anything I would want to install all on one drive.

I have been daily driving PopOs for almost a year and love it! Linux gaming has been improving so much recently and it's been awesome! Please keep up the Linux content!

Linux deserved to be gamed on.
actually, Linux may have better compatibility with XP-win7 era games than win10 does.

You really want to get the i7 in this case, the 4 core 8 threads makes a big difference, a lot more games can and will use the threads compared to when these were released. I had the i7 3770k and the extra threads help with stutter. You wont pay that much more for an i7 over an i5, you just have to spend more time looking

This is great, when I have the time I'm gonna give manjaro a go.

I think Elden Ring really struggles with anything less than 6c regardless of hyperthreading. The min CPU requirements are a ryzen 3600 or an i5 8400. As for the GPU -- try looking for a RX 5500 4gb (Non-XT OEM card). It's the same price on ebay, newer architecture, and performs better than the 480/580. Another great option for the Nvidia side is the 1650 super. I did a test on 6 different budget $200 gpus on linux and those were the two top contenders.

I would suggest running this system with Pop OS too cause the AMD
drivers come already pre installed and the iso and the distro is made for Linux Gaming. Definitely worth checking out the OS.

You making such an in-depth tutorial on Manjaro Linux gaming is awesome! I tried this on an RX570 with Manjaro about a year ago and was surprised how well everything ran. The only problem was I couldn't play Apex Legends, but apparently that's good to go now.

Nice project. Those Optiplex machines are great. My Optiplex has the i7-4770. When I have looked, those seemed much more common. Definitely worth looking at the 4770 machines, especially if the price difference is big enough. The 4770 is 3.4GHz base and 3.9 Turbo, while the 4790 is 3.6 base and 4.0 turbo, so not a huge difference. I believe everything else is the same. So people have a nice option when it comes to getting an i7 Optiplex.

Done the same with an i7-4790K, GTX 1050, and 24 GB of RAM. Decent for lite gaming and work.
