Have you ever wondered why some old PC games cannot be launched on Windows 11, but work flawlessly on Linux?

Compatibility for Games gets better and better on Linux, while slowly getting worse on Windows? And for the Performance its basically the Same?
I can See where this is heading. Awesome!

I still find it inncredible how games running on Proton just work so much better than native linux ports
Developers just don't care and thanks to Valve it's actually a problem to nobody now - no one has to write extra ports nor lose their library (well, aside from anti-cheat -, -)

I think is also bc many games rely on old dependencies that are no longer used/maintained but since proton/wine just convert the calls, they can convert something old to something similar new on Linux and that’s it

Is funny when you need mods to get an old game to run on windows, or use PCem/DOSbox but can easily be run in proton/wine

I didn't even think about the fact that the release of the Steam handheld was a huge win for Linux gaming.

This is one of my favorite Linux features. There are some games like Wolfenstein 2009 or The Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher bay that are a bear to run on Windows 11 because of that lack of compatibility but Wine accounts for all different types of Windows thus making it easier to run these games on there. There are even some games that run better with fewer CPU cores like Wolfenstien or even Crysis 1, and wine makes that so much easier to do compared to Windows,

If Valve will make Linux distro downloadable on every PC I'll instantly switch.

Proton is a fork of Wine, development of which is funded by Valve. However, both are open source and accept external contributions. This means if some nerd in their basement figures out how to run game xyz, eventually Wine and Proton will be able to play the game xyz in question.

Also, Windows slowly removes ancient API calls (features), while Wine aims to implement every single one ever existed in every copy of Windows.

Why would someone need Windows 11 when Windows 10 is just fine?

Microsoft spends tons of money on backwards compatibility. If you think otherwise, check out help menus in basic windows on Windows: you can end up with Windows 3.1 style windows that do run on 11.
