Also little-known tip for the region lock on a NES: It's just one pin on one chip that you have to cut or bend out, then not only is it region-free, but it can improve the amount of times a cartridge is successfully loaded AKA less blowing into the cart. Love the channel!!

1. Find N64
2. Buy hardware to cut my tray.
3. Takes apart N64.
4. Cut and put it back together.
5. It boots!
6. Remember I don't actually own any N64 Japanese carts.

I wish I had 23, 000 friends to send your way. There are few small channels that deserve that silver play button more than Nintendrew.

Thank you, Drew! I thought that my Japanese Super Mario 64 was completely useless, until you showed me how to easily modify it. Keep it up!

Nintendrew: “How to make your N64 play Japanese games with a 10-min mod!”
Also Nintendrew: Does the mod in 5 mins
Me: Impossible.

It is NOT necessary to cut out the tabs on the cartridge tray.
You can just remove the cartridge tray and put it away. Just to not destroy stuff.

For those who don't want to hack their cartridge tray you could just easily unscrew the back of the Japanese 64 game and swap it with the back of a US game. The tabs of the cartridge only apply to the back half so it should fit in fine without any modding.

such a lifesaver!! much easier than taking all my JP carts to the retro game store and having the backs swapped with a cheap US cart. you rock!

I ended up using a Cordless Power Drill last night and it worked surprisingly well. It's another good option for folks given that many have already have one.

Already modified my SNES 2 years ago, so now it's time to do the same with my N64. Thanks for the tutorial Drew! This method definitely needs more attention!

Just did this to my N64 because of this video! Worked great. Thanks! Ended up using a cordless drill and file to do it.
