Musical theatre is often the culmination of every art form with tons of collaboration. While sitting and watching is the accepted way to absorb this particular human experience you found a way to make the experience even more transformative. I applaud you too! ❤

if anything, fan art keeps one motivated to create, especially when you hit that art block. If you like something to be into it, that's an instant motivation/inspiration! It's also super satisfying to create fan art.

I think it's cool that something inside you spurned you on and it also changed your mind. We're always learning! Thank you for sharing, Professor Lieu! ❤

This came out so nice! I always thought of fan art as just... referencing stuff and people I like, rather than random things. Still builds skill and sparks great joy, and to me that's the most important thing. Now I've moved on to mostly my own projects and characters and such (writing a book and illustrating it) but fan art will always have a big place in my heart. I started really getting into art as a kid by drawing Harry Potter characters how I saw them in my head vs how they looked in the movies and I still think that's a pretty good exercise for both skill in referencing and putting your own vision and thought process on paper. Now that I think of it... I just might go do that again after all these years.

I’m in college for art, and I feel like fan art has really helped me develop my skills as an artis. A lot of the time I lack motivated to work on certain technical skills for the sake of it, but finding ways to incorporate my interests into my practice has helped so much! During high school I would use Cats (1998) to help me practice complex poses and drawing my favorite fictional characters over the years has helped me get really comfortable drawing people. Right now I’m working on a portrait of a character from my favorite musical for a final project. Just picking a random man to paint would never motivate me to work on the technical skills I’m trying to improve.

I’m part of the ‘generation’ of young artists that taught themselves how to draw through their interests, most being anime, movies, or basically any pre-existing media. If I were to compile all the art I have ever made in my lifetime (which isn’t really that much lol, I’m a teenager still) and sort through it all, almost half of it would be fan-art. And because I was in fandoms a lot, there was a lot of it. I used to be embarrassed about it until I remembered how much communities of video games and whatnot adore fan-artists because my friend once jokingly said “thank you for your service” when I mentioned it.

i never understood how people could view fanart as pointless or not real art, since art is meant to reflect the values of the artist making it, it shows how valuable the subject matter is to said artist. what they're creating is an attempt to portray the impact that something has had on them and it's full of love
