On July 16th 1999, the Kennedy curse struck again. The plane the former president jfk's son was piloting, came crashing down, making him yet another Kennedy to be struck by the terrible misfortune that plagued the family. But was it fate, coincidence, or something more ominous at play?

John F Kennedy junior was born into a life of fame. Just weeks before his birth, his father was elected president of the United States. He grew up surrounded by the walls of one of the most famous buildings in the world, the White House. But tragically, he would only get to spend his first 3 years of his life with his father. President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963.

I remember when it was revealed on the news that John Jr. was visual flight rules only certified, but he’d flown at night, in bad weather, and over the ocean. I get that he wanted the “all by myself” satisfaction of flying his SIL to her destination, and he and his wife to his cousin’s wedding. *However* Carolyn was late getting to the airport and the flying conditions had deteriorated. He should have put his pride to bed and accepted his fellow pilot’s offer to co-pilot the flight since he was instrument flight certified. He also should have filed that flight plan and been in contact with ATC through the whole flight.
Pride, poor timing, weather, and pilot inexperience cost three people their lives and damaged two families.

Such a huge rookie arrogant mistake by him! Never ever should have been flying that plane without an instructor that evening!

So let me get this straight. He felt nervous about flying alone due to his inexperience, refused a safety copilot who offered to go with him, and decided it was a good idea to fly in rough weather at night? And with 2 more lives on board? Just wow.

I flew into Martha's Vineyard the morning after the accident and there was still haze with low viz. Eerie feeling knowing of the accident the night before. I flew an IFR approach in our company jet . RIP.

It's surprising to me how reckless and arrogant he was in flying that day especially when he had the lives of 2 others, onboard. He told a friend he was nervous about making the trip and refused the offer from the other pilot to come along for added safety, so it was all a testosterone exercise to prove he could do it himself. Make a mistake flying and there's no recovery.

As an attorney, he should have recognized his responsibilities as a licensed pilot to the public, including his passengers. Hard to believe someone could ever be so utterly irresponsible. Disgusting!

Ironically his sister Caroline Kennedy refused to ever fly with him and their mother forbid him to to fly. He didn't do it until she transitioned

Spacial disorientation causes many aviation accidents. Unless you have dealt with this phenomenon personally, it's impossible to understand how challenging it is. Even IFR rated pilots are sometimes challenged by it, as in the Kobe Bryant accident. JFK Jr. made a mistake seen too often, where a VFR rated pilots flies into IFR conditions. He might have been okay if he had made the flight earlier, when there was still good daylight, but the combination of darkness and haze caused the disorientation and subsequent incorrect control inputs. Tragic accident I remember well.

The crash was caused by the pilot overestimating his piloting ability and skill. Not the first time that has happened and it won’t be the last unfortunately.

As a certified flight instructor and commercial certificated pilot, many people have asked me about how JFK Junior died, and I start the conversation with a one-word answer.
“Arrogance.”

There is no such thing as a "Kennedy curse"--only the consequences of their entitled and reckless behavior. Junior wiped out two-thirds of a family. I feel for them--not the Kennedys.

Anybody that could piece together the details reported beginning the next morning, knew there was never any mystery. He forged through a forest of red flags getting to the airport and should have accepted the offer of assistance. Just a sad old story that’s been repeated many times.

He had no damn business putting those women in danger!

As reported back in the day, this accident was totally avoidable. An inexperienced pilot on visual flight rules flying at night over water and in deteriorating conditions was a disaster waiting to happen. I only wish the sisters had been wise enough not to board under those conditions. It was so sad. And senseless.

The primary cause of that crash was hubris. The pilot flew himself and passengers into IFR conditions, at night, while holding only a VFR rating.

Lesson from a flight instructor, and former airline pilot:

Even though it's legal,
please don't fly in marginal weather (MVFR is 3 to 5 miles viz)
one doesn't have an instrument rating.

No instrument rating
+ flying at night
+ in low viz
+ over water
=no horizon to reference, and thereby, death.

RIP

Being just a VFR rated private pilot myself, I've done some actual instrument flying with an instructor and believe me you get disoriented easily if you're not used to it. Mistake number one refusing his friend help to fly and 2 his arrogance got the best of him in this situation.
