In this video I will explain the three (2 main) factors determining if a planet has an atmosphere. The 2 main factors are 1) temperature (affects the speed of the molecules in the atmosphere.), 2) gravity (affects the “pull” the planet has on the molecules in the atmosphere), and the third factor is 3) magnetic field (protects the planet from solar winds).

Maxwell - Boltzmann distribution. Stefan-Bolzmann is the temperature energy flux relation... easy to mix them up when talking about astronomy.

Are these 3 factors the only ones which influence the atmosphere of a planet, or are there many more which have a far more neglegible effect? I was surprised at first, because Venus has higher temperatures, a weaker gravitational force and weaker magnetic field than Earth, yet an atmosphere which is 100x thicker. Does this mean we can consider the greenhouse effect a 4th factor?
