Everyone talks about the messed up lies Evan tells other ppl in this play. But he's telling the lies to himself too. That's the saddest thing. This song is him living in his own lie.

I relate a lot to Evan, I don't have diagnosed anxiety but my dad left when I was 8, that fucked me up and gave a lot of problems to make friends. Now, 7 years later, I'm proud to say that I am a lot better but sometimes I can't help but feel really lonely. I just wish I had a friend that came to my mind when I listen to this, sadly I don't

This makes me so sad, because this friendship Evan sings about is so simple and sweet. And a lot of what he sings about is just feeling comfortable with someone. Inside jokes. Aimless talking. I think a big message of this play is that people (evan included) tend to focus on romantic connection as the place to find validation and fulfillment. But there are so many different relationships that can give you this. I think Evan starts to really heal when he starts valuing the relationships he already had. He already has the girl who sees beyond the broken parts of him, in his mom.
