Radiosynthesis was a theory for many years but recent discoveries revealed that actually, radiation-eating fungi could exist for millions of years. And that discoveries could be done thanks to fungi growing in Chernobyl, close to destroyed reactor number 4!

This is very interesting. I first heard about this fungi several years ago and it's still really hard to wrap my brain around.

Why did the mushroom go to a party?
...
'Cause he was a fungi.

I loved this vid! I've always been curious about fungi be used to detoxify irradiated soil for example-- Thanks for compiling this very interesting research!

What if mother nature was evil instead of loving. And instead of radiation eating mushrooms it made radiation producing shrooms that would eventually spread around a little.

I read a brief article about this observation, but I appreciate this deeper dive. Fascinating stuff!

Please make more videos like this! It was very informative. I loved it! You did a great job making and hosting the video. This research and use will definatly be part of our future.😀

Another great article, great work. I've also some similar works for the fungies in general, but no real info was shown how they react to radiation and similar biochemical situations/cases

I'd hypothesize that these radiotrophic extremophiles were likely feeding off of the energy released from the collision of alpha particles that were released due to alpha decay of radioisotopes, and were possibly also feeding off of the energy released from the collision of beta particles that were released due to beta decay of other radioisotopes. However, I have my doubts that these extremophiles would've easily fed off of gamma radiation due to how it can easily pass through relatively large amounts of matter compared to alpha or beta radiation, both of which are relatively easy to block.

Very much enjoyed this video.
Was looking for information on the topic and this seemed long enough to be pretty informative but short enough for my attention span. Then I started to enjoy it because of the host.
You kept me intrigued the entire time!
Thanks for posting this! I'll definitely be watching your channel again!

Is this a regular type of fungus that can quickly adapt or is this a strian that says dormant until it's has the energy to grow?

Not to be one of those "weeds good for everything guys..." But hemp/cannabis has been known to remove contaminates like heavy metals from soil pretty well, and I think sunflowers are also good for that. Theres a story from chicago about people growing weed in abandoned industrial places and heavy metals ending up in the flowers, and people consuming it and getting super sick

No matter what theory there might be, this is still proof that fungi, and other different organisms are very important in keeping the world healthy and in balance.

As well as:
Plankton
Sea grass
Algae
Bees
Trees
Coral reefs

The list is pretty much endless, we just don't fully know it.

I remember hearing about this a while back I was astounded that mushrooms could do that I mean I've heard of the benefits that they have in the huge role they play here on the planet but damn these little funguses are really super funguses they can really do everything

Could we use radiotrophic mushrooms to clean irradiated drinking water?
