First discovered in the inhospitable core of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor after its disastrous meltdown, radiotrophic fungi were found to not only survive, but to thrive in the high radiation environment. In this video we explore these fungi along with other radiation extremophiles such as the bacterium Deinococcus Radiodurans, and microscopic Tardigrades which can survive radiation levels which would be lethal to humans. Finally we explore what we could learn from these microorganisms and how they could even be useful to us in the future.

1:40 Oh, I’m sure some have identified how. But of course no one will fund that research because no profit to be made 😕

Could you end world hunger this way? By genetically modifying a human to photosynthesise these elements with the melanin in the skin

In that case Chernobyl is like ringing the dinner bell

we get something that looks like fungus or bacteria growing on calcium uranyl phosphate (autunite). It has to be kept in high humidity in order not to dry into meta-autunite. There is too little online to be able to identify it. I guess I'll never know until samples go to a specialty lab.

How is the video of this quality only gets 14k view? That is a crime! The youtube system is odd.. I have a experimental youtube channel that face the same issue. I made with passion and got 0 views.. all changed till I decided a crap brainless meme.. that one got over 40k views now after 2 years. I tried to replicate the same experiment this year it still ring the same, again.. 2k in less 24 hour wtf..
