That gasket is for under the sink so the nut has a slide surface for tightening. Some sets come with a rubber gasket for the top but if it doesn't then plumbers putty is required.

Everytime I use the parts as instructed the thing leaks. Doesnt matter if I tighten to a snug fit or over tighten, the damn thing leaks! The only way I have found to install this drain is by placing a bead of silicone under the lip of the drain.

I try every time following the proper steps but always results in leaks!

That gasket is not for under sink!!! that black Gasket is exactly for the top of the sink! and on the bottom theres clear gasket that goes between cone shaped rubber and screw on black nut, I just got this type of sink and that's exactly goes where this guy has showed. Check your manuals huh?
