How The Cranberries Changed Music

Sources/further reading:

Today, the Cranberries are one of the most successful alternative rock bands and IRISH bands of all-time. They have sold nearly 50 million copies of their albums. Their mix of dream pop, jangle pop, post-punk, and even Irish folk gave them a distinct sound that is often seemingly ubiquitous with the 1990s. Their success seemed unlikely- a band from a small city in Ireland that mixed heavenly pop songs with dark and often political lyrics- but their success was often driven by the undeniable commanding presence of Dolores O’Riordan, a feminist icon who filled a void in the alternative rock world that countered the grunge movement. Her influence, in particular, is not brought up enough.

Rest in peace, Dolores O'Riordan, you'll be forever missed. I can't believe that it's been 4 years since she passed, her haunting voice will forever linger on. 🥰😇

Knew nothing about The Cranberries apart from the fact that they were the band who made the song 'Zombie', so this video was really interesting. Thanks Mr Beat, and rest in peace Dolores O'Riordan

Fergal the drummer is a kind and humble man. Very grateful to have been able to chat to him late last year. He gave a lot of insight about the Cranberries, particularly the early years.

I’m 37 but I just really discovered them a few years ago and literally played their stuff over and over again. Her voice was absolutely incredible and had so much emotion in it. My favorite song would have to be you and me.

Great stuff as always. Love that Dolores always sung in her accent unlike putting a US accent on

Got to see Dolores at a rather small, solo show in 2007 when I was in college in Seattle. I almost didn’t go to it, but since she passed I obviously feel so fortunate I was able to see her. What a voice. RIP 🙏🏼✌🏻

No matter where I am ... I'm always hearing her music even after her death.

I don't know whether to feel heartbroken or flattered by those vocals but she really was a gift to the world by God.

I grew up listening to the Cranberries in middle school and high school.

Fascinating history, Beat!

And, as always, well told.

Rest In Peace Dolores.

Aloha 😊🙏🏼🤙🏼

At first I thought this was the "Raspberries" and thought, " oh cool! that band that did the 'go all the way' song!" but then it was the "Cranberries" who did the 'Linger' song, still cool! :D

That haunting, weird warbling at the end of 'Dreams' always did make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I wish that part was a bit longer, but still I really love that song.

i was a 90"s teen but appreciation for this band came well past their 90's heyday. I mean riverdance and celtic music was in vogue in the 90's & an insecure teenage boy with limited taste was just not gonna get into a band with a river dance vibe and a female lead singer. Now though, I see what a genuine talent O'reardon was. all i want to add is, stop what u are doing and watch the npr tiny desk concert by the cranberries, here on youtube. it is an amazing live performance
