This Scientist Grows Rare Edible Mushrooms

William Padilla-Brown is a citizen scientist who, at a relatively young age, taught himself the ways of mushroom cultivation in order to change the world. William made waves as the first American to grow cordyceps, a rare orange mushroom that grows from the larvae of insects. William heads a citizen-run research center dedicated to environmental regeneration efforts with the belief that connecting more to the environment will aid humans in its preservation. He advocates growing your own mushrooms as a means for both food and education.

Just the way he speaks. He’s so incredibly intelligent, it’s honestly captivating listening to him. I already loved mycology before finding him a few years ago but I remember when I did for the first time I could totally see myself falling in love with mushrooms even if I didn’t previously

“Get a feel for the life you’re trying to create a relationship with, and then develop a dialogue with the organism you’re trying to work with”
I have never been more moved by a statement in my life. I’m trying to do this exact thing with my veggie garden, and he just put my struggles into such an elegant sentence

I can confirm this about people not having enough to eat. Before Covid, I went to Memphis on the Elvis Presley pilgrimage. One evening, I decided to have a pizza and brought one with me to my hotel. On the way, a young guy asked me to give him a slice. I offered him a couple of dollars instead but he refused and said he was hungry. I was utterly astonished and took him with me back to the pizza restaurant and bought him what ever he wanted and gave him money for groceries. There is no way I will allow anyone in my vicinity to go hungry. How American people allow this to happen shocks me.

Dude is such a badass! Should start teaching people with lower incomes how to grow mushrooms as it's a great way to grow your own food without a yard

Damn what an intelligent, articulate man with a drive to succeed and not just in some clone job for a greedy employer. Instead, William was drawn to nature and all the abundant opportunities for food and income while respecting the natural world as well.
William, unless you already have a great partner you deserve someone like you.
