The Dark Side of Winston Churchill

National hero or criminal? The figure of Winston Churchill upon closer inspection appears extremely controversial. In England, his merits are extolled in every possible way, despite the fact that he was essentially a cruel racist. Churchill admired Hitler and repeated many of the Fuhrer's "achievements" - he shot protesters, set up concentration camps, starved people, and supported the annihilation of the Indian people and the Aborigines of Australia.

In fact, Churchill had arranged to meet Hitler, whom he admired, but Hitler failed to turn up. He wrote in "Great Contemporaries" that Hitler was the man to bring glory back to the German people. Their ideas converge more often than they diverge on race, white superiority and using violence for political ends. That Churchill had an incredible command of the English language, enabled him to massage his role in historical events to portray himself in a positive light. Remember, he was a politicians and to be one you have to be a good liar. Churchill was perhaps the best liar in history. Much of the material relevant to him, which should be open to the public in archives, remains secret, under lock and key to this day. Thanks for bringing this to the public domain!

We’d be a lot better off if we just treated famous politicians and historical figures like the normal people they actually were and not these perfectly black and white movie characters a lot of people act like they were. I think it’s just cause it’s easier to teach history that way in school so that line of thinking kind of carries over to adulthood.

This is utterly false. Churchill never greeted Hitler. He was the first to ring the warning bells of fascism back in the early 30s, while the rest of the government was in appeasement - give Austria away, give parts of czechoslakia away, let Germany rearm - all in the name of peace (neville chamberlain).

Hitler did admire Mussolini in the early 20s, NEVER did he admire Hitler. Both somehow predicted early on that they would be rivals.

This is why cherry picking the history you teach just hurts those who are ignored by it. Nobody ever has been or will be a perfect saint, we need to teach people the entire story no matter how dark it may seem to us now in the hopes that through this knowledge we can avoid history repeating itself.

I am apalled at how just for being a nationalist British most of them can be indifferent to the murder of other country men and put Churchil on the pedastal that he enjoys. I am not British but if I were to be one I will seriously doubt considering him as a hero .

Fun fact before hitler killed millions of people and was a horrible person he was actually a good leader and helped put Germany in order, so in 1935 (Antebellum) of course Churchill looked up to him.

It is a plight that we are not taught unbiased colonial history where there were more atrocities, loot, killing that one can even claim. I am really surprised with the little history that I have read about how Churchill was considered a great British leader with so much mess he had created and after all this was given a state funeral, what does this say...
