Shannon Walshe: Hi and welcome to The Daily Two. Each year more than 9,000 high school athletes are treated with heat illness across the US. That is a national rate of one student per hour per day. Jacquie, I suspect the rate is much higher in the South.

Jacquie Palisi: Yes. Dehydration is a recurring issue in Georgia and especially this time of year when the fall sports season begins. It's important to realize that playing outdoor sports in hot humid conditions can be very dangerous and even deadly for children who failed to hydrate properly. Knowing the warning signs and taking some simple precautions is key.

Shannon Walshe: So what are some of the sign Jacquie?

Jacquie Palisi: Signs of dehydration include extreme fatigue, cramping, head aches, dizziness, feelings of excessive thirst or dry mouth and profuse sweating that's more than usual.

Shannon Walshe: And the precautions?

Jacquie Palisi: Have your kids bring a water thermos to practice and games. Teach them these warning signs and encourage them to stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after play

Shannon Walshe: So Jacquie, exactly what the experts say about what to drink and how much?

Shannon Walshe: That's really helpful to know thank you Jackie
