Pond Life

No narration and no cameo appearance in this video, just the sounds of nature at the pond. This pond isn't on my property but it is adjacent to my land only about a five minute walk away. The pond has been there for many years in a disused gravel pit. It used to be very shallow and would go dry in summer, but in the past year beavers have moved in and built a lodge in the centre of the pond. The beaver is a master at hydraulic engineering, they have damed up the areas where the pond was loosing water and almost doubled the size of the pond and it is much deeper than it used to be. If you notice dead trees around the edge of the pond that is an indication that there are beavers at work, when they raise the water level trees at the edge of the pond suddenly find there roots under water and that kills the tree. Toward the end of the video I show you the very well camouflaged Beaver Lodge but unfortunately I have't been able to video the beavers yet. Since the beavers moved in there is a lot more wildlife than there used to be. Not sure how many turtles there are but as you can see I have seen three at one time and I have seen a number of smaller ones off in the water. not sure of the breed but they might be Painted Turtles if anyone knows for sure please leave a comment There is a nice close-up of a frog and two different kinds of tadpoles. Frogs, toads and salamanders all lay there eggs in ponds and they hatch into tadpoles. There is also a close-up of one tadpole in it's second year stage starting to grow legs. I know that there are at least two families of Black Ducks but I have't been able to get video of them so far either, so maybe there will be a Pond Life II later on this summer.

From what I've heard they are a rare sight for most people. Then again most people don't look at nature ;) have you ever just sat and watched all the life that flies around a big flowering plant? It's crazy the bugs we have ;)

How nice! I think it is great how the beavers made the pond twice the size. It creates more habitat for the wildlife. That is a good thing. We have a pond on our property, and we love it. It attracts so much wildlife as well, and I am now hearing the peepers  at night. Spring is here ! Nice video. Thank you, Dale !

Years ago at another beaver pond along the side of the road, early one morning on my way to work, I watched a very large turtle burying her eggs in the sandy bank along the roadside.

Must be breeding season here I drove to Fredericton and back today and saw three large ones trying to cross the highway in different locations. Different breed than these ones, much bigger.

There are several varieties here in the Maritimes, my problem is I can't tell one from the other.

Dale, I'd like to use this video as part of some freely downloadable Ponds curriculum for Kindergarten. The students would use it for a virtual field trip. Is that okay with you?

Very nice video.I have a weekend get away home with ten acres about and hour from my house. It would be the perfect place if it had a pond. Your video makes me want to dig one.

We really liked it. I loved all of the working farms. It was like a big patchwork quilt; the red dirt, green grass, and blue ocean. The seafood was good, too. We even went wading in the ocean. The PEI National Parks have great exhibits. We went to Magnetic Hill and the zoo in Moncton, the night before. We spent two nights at The Anchor Inn by The Sea, B&B, in North Rustico; and two nights at The Cable Head, B&B, in St. Peters Bay. Both places I highly recommend.

Wow that was quick, I had a large ceramic Chinese Egg pot that I had a small water lilly in and I put some tadpoles in that, it too almost a year but they turned into salamanders. Thanks for the turtle
ID I was looking at photos online and though the closest I saw to them was the painted turtle.

amazing share sir :) wow it took me until the turtle came out of the water to know what was sitting in the sun all that time and a bit longer to notice the turtle to the left :/ lol before I started watching the video the still picture to me kinda looked like either an otter or a beaver :)
