In this video, Walker Reynolds shares what the future of connected devices will look like. Devices need two things to be IIoT Ready: Connectivity & Intelligence. Devices that need a gateway, PLC, or some intermediary device, Like the Advantech Uno, are not IIoT Devices. Smart devices will be able to connect directly to the cloud and publish their data to a central unified namespace such as an MQTT Broker running on an Ignition Gateway or a Chariot SCADA.

Walker makes the prediction that devices shipped in 10 years will all be IIoT ready.

What do you think?

I think you should separate terms transport and protocol when talking about connectivity. Because you can transport MQTT data over various transports

Am I missing something? Why would you want to publish data to the cloud when you need it locally for control? That’s like flying to Europe to get to your next door neighbour’s house.
