Another reason to grow more than one variety (of anything) is that I've noticed that pests usually prefer one variety over another, so I consider one of them to be sacrificial.

I agree with everything you said. In my zone 4 garden, slugs can be a problem but I use Safers Slug Bait (iron phosphate). I usually only have to put it out 2 or 3 times a season and that does the trick. Although my broccoli gets cabbage worms, my cabbage rarely does. I guess they are all eating my broccoli.

I normally let 2 or 3 of my 12 seed for the bees and to adapt to the area.
I have 5 different kinds and I do the same with all.

Thank you for this video. I was considering growing cabbages this year and had not properly considered how big they would get. Now, I know that I might have enough space to grow one head of cabbage in each raised bed.

Years ago, I watched a program where the gardener harvested a head of cabbage by just cutting below the head, leaving the rest of the plant intact. This was done because multiple, smaller heads of cabbage will form. Have you tried or experienced this technique?

I finally got a huge cabbage last year. My problem was the cabbage worms would eat more than I would. Last year I put a fine netting over it and no more cabbage worms. The netting allowed light and water to go through.

If you just harvest the head and leave part of the plant it will grow smaller heads! Here in WI I’ll plant in May and harvest my main heads in July and then smaller heads in Sept!

Mine just won’t form a head. The weather keeps going from 80 to 50 here!!

I grew an awesome head of cabbage last year....by mistake. I thought it was a collard until it was actually time to harvest it. LOL What a surprise that was. Now I'm afraid to be more purposeful in my planting. We'll see.

I love cabbage! This is a very valuable vegetable! It contains a lot of sulfur, so a menu that includes cabbage makes us happy!
Sulfur is an important winter element for creating human endorphins (happiness hormones). Great video!

I love planting them in Fiji Winter. Great crop with larger heads. I use Taki Seeds, which give huge heads. Weeding is important for larger heads. Takes about 60 to 70 days for larger varieties. Spray Thrive Veggie and Herb or Karyon Soil booster. Karyon is a good organic liquid fertilizer.
