From what I read, there is a high payoff in terms of technological innovations and mining on these missions. Basically they end up solving space problems they wouldn't have initially realized could be used on earth. The technology developed for the Rover has led to significant innovations in pharmacological testing, wastewater management, geology, and robotics.

It looks like you've reversed one of the images as the delta does not look the same in both images -- the delta is the same but just reversed.
