It seems to me if those Ancient Structures are still up says a lot about their construction !!

The faces of the Great Pyramid are not completely flat; each face is slightly indented vertically from the peak to the base making the pyramid eight sided. During an earthquake the casing stones on each face will tend to slide towards the centre thereby directing the forces to the centre and to the base and locking the stones together. If the faces were flat, the stones will tend to slide outwards and fall easier. Also control the movement of the facing stones during thermal expansion. If the faces were flat, they would bulge in the heat of the day and the casing stones will gradually move outwards and fall off.

I live in California, when I hear 5.5 or 5.9 on the Richter scale I think “that’s child’s play, wouldn’t even wake me up.”

Nice explainer! Any estimate of how many large (mag>6?) earthquakes the Giza pyramids are expected to have survived since their construction over 5000 years ago? Also, I wonder if Saqqara is more earthquake prone? Thanks!

When you were in Cairo you must have gone to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. Best museum in the world in my opinion.

Question...

I once heard or read a bit about the foundation of a pyramid that was found that suggested that a large pyramid once existed near the coast and near the Nile, but it was hypothesized that Romans had dismantled the pyramid to use the limestone and the blocks to build roads and for foreign trade.

I really don't remember where I heard or read that, but haven't been able to find anything about it. I found it to be fascinating, but really don't know how to look for information on it.

Do you or any of your subscribers know anything about this "former" pyramid?

I'd appreciate any input!

Thanks! 😊

I believe the cratons in Africa have a stablizing effect, preventing the pyramids from shifting position during an earthquake.

I would think anything that old that could be knocked down by an earthquake would have fallen down long ago.
But I would be wrong, of course. As Kayleigh mentions, ancient structures do still get damaged by earthquakes.

Those beautiful Chinese temples are nearly earthquake proof from what I've seen.
