10 prehistoric creatures found beneath ice
It is no coincidence that some of the best-preserved marvels of the planet’s past have been kept
preserved within ice. Today we’ll see some unusual incidents that mostly involve regular animals that
you are familiar with, but these frozen stories are way more interesting.
Scientists and researchers have made a lot of progress in finding prehistoric species through studying
animals remains found throughout the world. But you know they have hit a jackpot when they come
across an animal literally frozen in time, in the cold unforgiving environments on our planets.
We’ll be saving the best for last, so make sure to stick around and be patient! Let’s begin the countdown
to 10 prehistoric creatures found beneath ice!
10. Yuka Mammoth
Let’s begin with the most valuable find of the century perhaps, a Yuka Mammoth beautifully preserved
in ice found in Siberia, Russia, in 2010. The mammoth was so perfectly mummified in the snow that it
had a full brain, with folds and blood vessels still visible.
This find enabled scientists to study the brain and it was found that this 40,000-years old specimen was
not much different to our modern-day elephants. The specimen found was a month-old baby Mammoth
that probably got stuck in mud and later died of suffocation.
Where the specimen was found, was an actual hidden treasure of other preserved examples of the
specie, however, not as perfectly unspoiled as the initial find!
Scientists and researchers love the specie and these samples are highly sought after today. That is
because it is highly possible that we might be seeing this extinct species being brought back to life using
cutting edge technology to replicate the animal using its DNA.
10. Yukagir Bison
Siberia has one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth, but we humans haven’t shied away from
this place and have inhabited it for millennia. In 2011, the frozen remains of a Yukagir Bison were
discovered in none other than Siberia.
This animal is the ancestor of the modern-day bison as initial inspection revealed due to a highly intact
carcass. Despite being over 9000 years old, this was the most complete specimen ever found and
scientists were able to study the heart, brain, digestive system and blood vessels of the animal. It was
also revealed that the animal had died due to lack of nutrition due to the rapid changing environment in
the area at the time of its existence.
9. Frozen Fish
Call it bad luck or just a regular day in the wild, but an entire shoal of fish was frozen mid-swim off the
coast of Norway in 2014. Thanks to a swift eastern wind, part of the ocean froze near Lovund, a small
island just a few miles from the Northern shores of the Norway mainland.
Despite the temperature being only around -8 degree Celsius, the wind chill was cold enough to freeze
along with the fish right where they were. Aril Slotte of the Norwegian marine research institute
Havforskningsinstituttet told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation that he thinks the fish were being
chased by a predator, which have made them group up in such big numbers.
Well, whatever the reason, we’re pretty sure someone was happy with the huge supply of fresh fish in
the cold weather.
8. Tardigrades
Tardigrades, also known as water bears, are a very small creature that grows up to only 1 millimeter in
size and is known for its exceptional survival skills. To survive, these creatures are known to slow down
their body functions to a point of almost hibernation.
In 1983, in an experiment led by humans, (obviously), specimens of Tardigrades were collected in
Antarctica and frozen in a lab at temperatures as low as -20 degree Celsius, or 4 degree Fahrenheit. At
these temperatures, anything would die, but in 2014 these small resilient creatures helped scientists
break a record when they were found alive after being defrosted after 30 years.
Not only that, the surviving animals mated and laid more eggs that successfully hatched with no signs of
abnormality or deformities. Pretty amazing feat for such a tiny organism.
7. Foxes
Alright, we know this one isn’t so pre-historic, but the incident surrounding it is so interesting that we
couldn’t miss out on including this!
It is not just ancient species that get caught up in the ice, and it seems one of the creatures quite often
found frozen in time is the fox. No one has been able to establish why these animals are so prone to
becoming entombed in ice, but hardly a cold snap seems to go by without a stunning image of a fox
doing the rounds.
