How to test an EV charger installation to BS7671 using the Metrel 3152 & A1532 EVSE adaptor

We look at how to test an electric vehicle charger installation using the Metrel MI 3152 and a dedicated chargepoint test adaptor A1532. The Metrel 3152 multifunction tester has a number of useful time-saving feature for electricians who are looking to get in the rapidly growing EVSE install market.

Paired with the A1532 adaptor we run through the BS7671 electrical testing requirements to validate the functional testing and safety of an EV charger installation. Including earth fault loop impedance, RCD testing and 6mA DC earth leakage tests.

The tester will compare test results with the required values indicated in BS7671 18th Edition wiring regulations. The Metrel A1532 is suitable for all manufacturers EV chargers. In this video, we are testing a Myenergi Zappi 2.

Excellent video guys, excellent for the big companies out there installing chargers but with so many test sequences to do and over £2000 for the test kit and lead etc i do not think i will be branching out in EV Charger installs and testing.

Great video gents. Would this full sequence of test need to be carried out at installation and if an eicr was being done? Or maybe the full range of test is more for fault finding?

The only thing that trips me up is on the RCD test there was no instructions you have to switch between A & C modes. I know it should be knowledge but most of the other menus tell you what to do, there it just assumes you know what to do next

I loved this video and used it to guide me on a Sync EV install. It passed all tests until the dc test did not trip the RCD after injecting 6mA so failed. I tried several times and it still failed at that point. I have no idea what to do now!

I wonder if the upgradeable software will take into account amendment 1 and the loss of PEN. I assume we will need to test this is compliant. Not sure how - the supply voltage is fixed and the meter measures this rather than alters it. Thoughts?

If we had a scenario where we had say 4 x 22kw 3ph chargers but some vehicles are only capable of taking a single phase charge. So potentially you could have 4 cars charging defaulting to 7.4kw max all on the brown phase.
Would you be better to cross the phases to try and balance out the loads.
Most new cars will take a 3ph charge but some will only take a single phase.

Great video as always. Just done my ev course and now doing my research of what meter to buy. Have you tried the megger 1741 plus with thier ev adaptor tester?
