The low self esteem person is that way from years of people bullying them, so that's why they interpret it that way.

I usually say thanks, and then try to find something to compliment about in return but take too much time to say it untill it gets awkward. Awkward self esteem.

today I learned I have mid level self esteem. always thought it was low.

That's insane because I know I say "thanks" every time but I know the wolf inside me says, "they are trying to be condescending" and I don't listen to that wolf. I starve that wolf. I don't hat wolf speak. I thank the person even if I don't FEEL amazing after the compliment. I'm not grateful because I determine how I feel based on getting compliments. I am grateful because I believe they were honest and I can trust them more and I want them to feel like they can compliment me again, because they absolutely can and I will appreciate it as best as I can, even if I am still working on being good at appreciating compliments

I used to have low self esteem. I had to do a lot of healing to get to where I'm at now.

"Nice shirt"
"I'm never wearing this shirt ever again."

But also, we can't use the compliment as validation of our self worth either. "They complimented me, that means I matter!" Which can also happen. I would like to know more about this topic too.

Whenever i get a compliment i ignore it, because my true self is distant from my body and my ego. I used to get angry when i had low self-steem.

Idk if this is condescending but I would assume they are just trying to be nice. They dont actually mean the compliment.

Yeah I get so caught up I really do forget it’s me distorting things and not actually what ppl are thinking and feeling towards me.

The thing is, i can say thank you to strangers who compliment me. But when my partner does it, i just dont believe it

Here is my question in this I still say thank you but sometimes I wonder if it is a manipulative comment when I'm out there in the dating scene? So what is the best thought process for this scenario?

I have low esteem but I know when someone says hey I like your shirt I interpret it as a compliment

I actually think this is a generated problem by the saturation of the trope of having the comedic negative inner dialogue in Hollywood movies from the 80s and until the present.

You know those jokes where everyone is smiling and being polite but at the same time there's an inner dialogue natation of "I actually really hate all of you".

It started as a comedic thing, but know I think all of us who've been brought up with it think that it's the default way people actually think.

lol I just give an enthusiastic THANKS! Because I know I wear dope shirts

How about: "Oh no, I'm so horrible that all they could think of to complement was this low quality rag. I suck.

How much of this is based on our hormonal health, how much is based on how our parents raised us? Can bad parenting cause hormonal issues where you do feel like a shell of a person growing up and now as a full adult still

What if I have to wear a shirt I don’t like and pretend I like it, I guess I have to act as if and pretend I do.

I'd say: "Really? And what parts of my shirt do you like?"
