you can actually sometimes get mario to walk all the way over and touch toad in the first 2 games. Smb1 optimally takes just over 2 minutes, 2j takes about 2:10

There's a way faster Toad in 3D land. if you wait around on the title screen for a bit, you can play in a secret room where some toads are.
