Destroy Aphids By Doing NOTHING!

Aphids can be concerning to find in the garden and while its tempting to react by spraying pesticides I often find it better to wait. It feels like you are making the wrong decision by ignoring them but often times spraying pesticide won't really do anything anyway. I will spray with some water at the start to try and slow them down but eventually the lady bugs or ladybeetles always show up. If you killed everything to begin with they have no reason to be there and once the aphids inevitably return you will be left with the same problem. Instead of fighting I choose to create a paradise for bugs and all life in general so that the garden can balance itself out. The ladybug larva then come in and cleanup all the aphids for me. The first year was rough but now that I have reached more a of balance my garden has never been healthier or happier!

my peach tree had tons of aphids then i saw the ladybug larva just before I was going to spray the tree, glad I did not, they cleaned up the peach tree and moved on to my honeysuckle and are cleaning that up now!

My mom discovered a local garden shop in our area that sells ladybugs. She bought a pack of 1, 000 when her garden got badly infested with aphids. The problem has been fixed for over a decade.

one of the wisest women i know said something that stuck with me “usually, when you encounter something harmful in an environment, the antidote is not far away. poisons and antidotes always grow near each other, so before panicking, just look a little harder.” perfect example here

That infestation was mild. The level of infestation I had this year on my borage was so thick, the leaves were weighed down and curled because of the aphids. You could see the damn things from 50 feet away they were so thick. Sometimes treatment is necessary (although I didn't bother - I use the borage to attract bees, so I didn't want to do anything to make the bees sick, and since I'm not eating the borage it's not a big deal if it dies).

Related and an important note:

Yes ladybugs are amazing beneficial garden helpers. However! Please do NOT purchase ladybugs online for your garden! Almost ALL lady bugs are wild harvested, AKA poached, from California. They are essentially an invasive species anywhere else. Focus on planting and attracting native plant and animal species and build and plant your garden to benefit your local environment and build biodiversity!!!

There was a dramatic drop in the ladybug population for a while that was really concerning. Thank you for being patient and conscientious.

I'm a cook by trade, currently working as a meat cutter. It amazing how many in the general public fail to understand their food comes from an ecosystem.

An ecosystem that they themselves are a part of as well. I'm glad you're here to present this basic and great information.
