Risk & Reality: When Fear Traps Us

We can’t help knowing that something bad could happen if we do X…or Y…or maybe Z. Like Odysseus steering his ship between sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis, we must navigate between risk avoidance and recklessness. One keeps us out of life; the other jeopardizes wellbeing. In pre-modern times life in the external world was fraught with danger and risk; in the modern world, the consequences of risk are more often internal.

Possible disappointment, shame or failure may feel intolerable, but not constitute actual disaster. Assessing risk requires willingness to engage inner conflict--and discern, then answer, the call to enlarged life. When Odysseus’ ship later sank, he clung to the roots of a fig tree. He, and we, have access to psychic roots that can support us. And the day came when the risk to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin

HERES THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:

"In the countryside, I find a baby crawling on the side of a road with some cars driving by. I saw the mother earlier and I judged her for being so irresponsible. It enrages me but I fear expressing my rage. I do not want to provoke drama from her. I pick up the baby and bring it to where she stays with her family in a holiday home. The family doesn't take her so seriously; when I place the baby with them they are not even surprised or shocked about it. She seems unimpressed as well. I still worry about drama coming from them but it doesn't seem to come. The baby appears unbothered, too."

I really needed to hear this discussion. I am healing from CPTSD and recent PTSD and I find myself holding back, staying small and at home.

Today I was asking the universe for a sign on whether I should quit my job and go for my passion or not. And this is the best possible answer I could have received. Thank you so much for what youre doing. Bless you.

My understanding of taking risks is that we always feel fear when considering new territory, and that courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

Are there tools that people can work with to speak with the shadow and integrate it? If there is a traumatic event, then the nervous system seeks to protect the body, which is a response that is beyond reasoning. There must be a way to make friends with the fear and show it love and respect, instead of pathologizing it.

The pandemic was exploited by conspiracy theorists but also by those who believed EVERYTHING they were told by governments that used this crisis to gain more power AND big pharma who made hundreds of billions of dollars at OUR expense. No critical thinking = no freedom and no progress. The fear this created is still being used by people who are more concerned with virtue signalling than with the truth and both have been exxagerating the risks of vaccines or viruses. And who benefits from fear?? Perhaps those who gain power and profits from people living in uncertainty and life.
