How to use Flexi Rods on straight hair to easily create heat-free curls

I actually use this method, but use the crown and sides technique. Instead of two vertical bars down the center, just one, bangs opposite direction. Sides alternating in curl clockwise vs counterclockwise on each side. Gets better results, especially with baby fine hair texture.

My hair is not long just shoulder length and it’s very difficult to wrap the ends around the rod. Any tips? Maybe I should use hair paper to wrap easier?
