In this video, I look at the cytoskeleton.

The cytoskeleton is a complex network of protein fibres and accessory proteins that provide essential support and strength to the cell. It plays a crucial role in absorbing mechanical stress, controlling cell shape and movement, enabling muscle contraction, and aiding in chromosome separation during mitosis and meiosis. Additionally, the cytoskeleton helps the cell divide and provides trackways for moving molecules and vesicles.

The cytoskeleton is an organised structure consisting of filaments arranged in parallel arrays with cross-linking. Three main types of filaments are involved in its functions: actin filaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments. An important aspect to note is that while the cytoskeleton often appears as a flat, two-dimensional static structure in images, it is actually a dynamic, three-dimensional structure within the cell. The filaments' length and composition can continuously change, regulated by their attachment to one another, the organelles, and other controlling proteins in the cell.
