Energy Drinks: Why Are They Sending So Many People to the ER?

Apparently, like many indulgences, too much of a good thing can be bad for you. It's not just the caffeine that can give you the jitters -- additives like guarana, ginseng and taurine can also play havoc with your health.

Now, the American Medical Association has called for a ban on marketing of energy drinks to children, while doctors continue to press the FDA to require the makers of these popular drinks to better identify what's in them and to restrict caffeine levels.

Dartmouth Health, New Hampshire's only academic health system and the state's largest private employer, serves patients across northern New England. Dartmouth Health provides access to more than 2,000 providers in almost every area of medicine, delivering care at its flagship hospital, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, NH, as well as across its wide network of hospitals, clinics and care facilities. DHMC is consistently named the #1 hospital in New Hampshire by U.S. News & World Report and recognized for high performance in numerous clinical specialties and procedures. Dartmouth Health includes its Dartmouth Cancer Center, one of only 51 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation, and the only such center in northern New England; Dartmouth Health Children’s, including the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the state’s only children’s hospital and clinic locations around the region; member hospitals in Lebanon, Keene and New London, NH, and Windsor, VT, and Visiting Nurse and Hospice for Vermont and New Hampshire; and more than 24 clinics that provide ambulatory services across New Hampshire and Vermont. Through its historical partnership with Dartmouth and the Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth Health trains nearly 400 medical residents and fellows annually, and performs cutting-edge research and clinical trials recognized across the globe with Geisel and the White River Junction VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. Lol 500mg of caffeine? A normal red bull doesn't even contain 200mg. P.hd in propaganda here

“Red Bull gives you wings” is actually a disclaimer… they tell you it kills you in the slogan. Sends you to heaven

Who’s watching this right now drinking a “energy drink”

I am energy drink addict. The caffeine doesn’t bother me. I wish that they could make monster drinks for example with no caffeine or very little caffeine but maintain the taste.

I was an energy drink user for 20 years. I had to quit.. my body just could not take it anymore. My last Monster energy sent my blood pressure to 210/100... that's stroke territory. That scared me enough to never touch the stuff again. I now have hypertension and chronic high blood pressure. I dont have a family history of high blood pressure, and I am an active person. I blame the 20 years of energy drink consumption to be the biggest factor. Im 45... so an old fart to most of you, but let my story be a warning because you will be 45.

It's not the energy drink that kills you. It's you being stupid and drinking 5 of them while not getting enough sleep, exercise, quality food and so on.

This is propaganda by the coffee industry.

Being a cyclist I prefer water over everything else regarding hydration. Just simple water.
But good to hear what others drink to feel good or "powered", which actually scares me.

I use a small redbull can once or twice per week. Just gives me a boost. The taste is amazing and the effect comes in fast. I think using it in moderation for energy is fine.

A 12oz Red Bull has 111mg of caffeine in it, and a 12 oz coffee has 142 mg of caffeine in it, a rockstar energy drink has 180 oz of caffeine in it. An energy drink does not have 500 mg of caffeine in it, unless you drink a lot of it. I do believe that it isn’t very good to drink energy drinks though because of the other stuff they put in it.

i just read about 8 lawsuits filed against energy drink companies for wrongful death and stroke and all of them were settled. there’s a strong precedent for settlement. imagine tobacco companies targeting kids. my 10 year old son has a friend whose parents let him drink monster because they think it’s just a soft drink. he might as well light one up. he’ll live longer.
