When you’re dealing with a no-start complaint on a gas engine, you only have three things to check. Is it getting fuel? Is it getting spark? Can the engine compress the air/fuel mix?

But on a diesel, it’s another story! Watch this edition of The Trainer to learn more!

If you are a bit dumbfounded, check that your glow plugs are actually getting power, i was super worried, and it was all the relay that had gone...

Thanks for this. My van's been standing for a year or so and the house is being sold next month so you can imagine the worst case scenario. I replaced the battery, did a bit of percussive maintenance on the solenoid and she fired right up!

The first test could be just listen to the cranking. If your battery starts getting weaker after a few times, you have compression

How come no one does MAF testing on (like 4 gen Ram) diesels? Just found your videos and they are very informative. I can't wait to do some testing. Gotta find out why ecm pin 80 to my MAF only has 11.4 V, While ecm is getting battery voltage (12.4). Videos very inspiring.

When I worked at L.A. D.W.P. we had only a few light duty diesels, both the 7.3L V8 and the 6.0L V8.
The 7.3's ran great in the vans only had one 6.0 that would not start after it was shut off. Relative compression and 48 volt FICM no problem, but the I.C.P. at cranking was supposed to be a minimum of 500 PSI like you said.
The low pressure fuel system was delivering fuel to the HP pump with no problems, I don't remember the reading now. The truck I had was at 250 to 275 PSI for the High Pressure.
I was working on it in L.A., but after one day (and a total learning curve) they took it on a roll back to Mojave.
I had read a lot about 6.0's, and some of their diagnostics.
I wanted to check the Injector Control Pressure Sensor and Control valve as I had read how if they get contamination in them, that will cause a no start. Sadly, the truck was taken before I could do that.
Thanks for the info Pete.

Hello... What if you have a small air leak in the fuel line leading from the tank to the primer..

I have an L200 pick up...i changed glow plugs, fuel filter, primer pump and i over hauled the fuel injecter pump...

Hey, I have a 07 6.0 that will crank and fire but won’t start. When it fires it dumps out black smoke and kinda smells like something’s burning. I have a few things I plan on checking like the ficm and air filter but was hoping for your opinion. Thanks

Surely a petrol engine needs the spark at the correct time
