I have been living in Japan, for a decade. There is absolutely no enthusiasm for the Olympic Games. The general population is concerned about the pandemic and its adverse impact on myriad businesses and local economies.
Only 1% of the population have received a dose of the vaccine. There is no viable plan to vaccinate the populous prior to the arrival of foreign athletes, let alone before the games actually commence.
There is no economic upside to holding the games. The losses are locked in place and there was no offsetting mechanism to begin with, it was a financial loss to begin with. The Olympic Games, lose money and cost the host monies that are not recoverable, nor does it spur tourist trade on any large scale.
Typically, as in the USA, the host city bears the cost. In Japan, the entire country has to offset the monies spent.
I live in Nara, the games sans pandemic might have increased tourism over a three week period. Maybe. And it is moot. Besides the fact, the weather is hot & miserable.

Yes, the Games should not go ahead until most or all the population has been vaccinated, and that will not happen until well past the time when they are due to be held. The Games, even if they do go ahead will lose so much money with few, if any spectators in the arenas and the special atmosphere of the games will be lost. It is time for the country to cut its losses and for its leaders to abide by the wishes of most of their people.
If possible, Tokyo can host the games in 2032, , after Paris and Los Angeles.
But even without the pandemic, I am puzzled why countries should want to host them, as they have become an enormous white elephant, rife with corruption and cheating. They also have too many sports and are becoming ever more difficult to organize. A lot of the facilities built at such great expense are not even used afterwards, as can be seen in the city where the summer games last took place, Rio De Janeiro in Brazil.

Postpone it to 2022; even if it cost 1-3 billion on maintenance lost.
or extend the Olympics event time*
*e.g If the Olympics was supposed to be 4 weeks long, make it 12-16 weeks and break up the events schedule so they won't be hosted simultaneously. Get USA to send their extra vaccine to Japan and then require all who enter Japan to stay in hotel/set area for 5-11 days (after India''s current spike is resolved)
All comes down to planning.

In Japan, there are so many patients of coronavirus. However, in Tokyo, only 15000 PCR tests are conducted each day. That is so small number because Tokyo is one of the biggest city in the world. so there are a lot of patients who got coronavirus without showing any symptom at all. I think athletes and media member will be at high risk when arriving Tokyo.

Japanese government gives priority to the Olympic even though the number of infected people is increasing. Many Japanese people think the Olympic should be canceled.

Why is A cancelation not considered a longterm postponement. Japan can always hold the games again.

Who wants to see such an Olympics? As a Japanese, I must say that this political decision is wrong.

We should just get rid of the olympics. I mean, what’s the point of them. I never really pay attention to them anymore.

If Istanbul have won the rights to host the Olympics last year, I think they could push thru the games this year in my opinion.

It should definitely be cancelled. Despite the fact that maybe everybody participating will be vaccinated and tested many times, I can’t imagine
more dangerous set up that could create are huge disaster when people from almost every part of the world gather at the same place - when we realize that so many different strains of the virus from the whole world could end up in one place!!

If they don’t cancel I would love to see the Olympics made through ONE GIANT ZOOM CALL...

I think they should delay it another year. Then in a year it can be a worldwide comeback bash. And yes, the world will be vaccinated in 15 months, or at least those who will accept vaccinations.

Hopefully much of the world will boycott the Beijing games next year.
