So the countries never make profit out of Olympics its all just for prestige of hosting the event, i feel it is such a waste of money.. Every time a city has to build all the infrastructure needed for events and then it will be left unused.... Insted they could all decide one place where they can hold Olympics and everyone could contribute to not burden any economy... There may be a few vices in this too but still it is a considerable alternative just saying.

Japan might have spend billions but it is no way a waste of money. All the investments are long term with clear benefits to general public.
- all metro station have protective guards now
- brand new fuel cell buses are running across Tokyo now
- the metro stations that lacked proper support for strollers/wheel chairs got an upgrade
- the signs at stations have been upgraded: detailed information in multiple languages
- the apartments build for athletes are excellent. These will be sold (already sold) to public after the event with minor modifications
- the newly build sports facilities will be open for public consumption after the event

There are many more.
