How Big Does Reishi Grow? The Story of The Big Reishi

Reishi is one of the most popular and well known medicinal mushrooms in the world. It has a long history of use, and is typically used by making a tea or tincture. People take Reishi for vitality, immune protection and overall wellness.

When grown for medicinal purposes, Reishi are typically relatively small- maybe the size of a dinner plate. But if done correctly, it is possible to grow them much bigger!

We recently were lucky enough to have acquired one of these giant Reishi. After posting a pic of it on Instagram, we got so many questions that we decided to put this video to hopefully answer any questions you might have.

I had no idea mushrooms could grow this big.

I have a wild one nearly that big that i picked in north cali. It was growing on a giant fallen tree. They grow this big in a single season if the substrate is huge and the fruit point is small. All you have to do is dry it well and it will be basically preserved and pretty durable. One time a hurricane knocked the power out and it got super wet for a week and trich started (wasnt even seeded in the fruit body, the trich formed on dust that accumulated in the folds -- so i washed it off with a hose and let it re dry. It is fine and still is shiny and rock hard years later.

I remembered my Traditional Filipino Chinese parents telling me that Reishi (Ling Zhi in Chinese) is a "Longevity elixir" according to our ancestors. :)

So given part of the title for this vid "How Big Does Reishi Grow?" i thought we were going to find out how big it can grow, like how big is the biggest it can get?

Unless you want it to deteriorate it should probably be sealed somehow.

I've been reading the comments. It seems to remind people of all kinds of things. But unless I missed it, no one mentioned what it reminds ME of. I think it looks like an umbrella.
I picture Alice standing under it as the caterpillar tells her one side will make you grow smaller and the other will make you grow larger.

I think the way it was grown was the pins, the young mushrooms, when still in antler form, were all put close together. All the mushrooms were made from the same culture, having the same DNA so they could combine. As they grew, they fused together and put the energy and resources of 8 mushrooms into 1 huge one.

I did a quick look through your videos looking for one on the wine cap stropharia but didn't find it. Maybe you could do one on cultivating that one or just putting them in a garden.

A lot of these giant Ganodermas (灵芝) are on display on tradicional pharmacies or stores where traditional herbs are sold in all over China, but usually they only sell the small ones. I found in nature big Ganodermas, not as big as this one, but more than half in size. Another interesting mushroom sold in markets in China is an small Termitomyces, very tasty, called in chinese 黑皮鸡枞菌. Is worth making a video about it, specially the history of his cultivation.

The health store sells like 30grams of reishi powder for 40$. This must be worth 5000$

I thought it was a replica the first time I saw it lol . I also love medicinal mushrooms and I use to film them myself (feel free to check). A few days ago I collected some wild Reishi myself, and one of them had aboout 20 cm in diameter, I thought it was so big, but now it seems a dwarf! :)

Correction: Such mushrooms have powder spores in the wild !
That powder is like low fat cacao in color. That powder is also medicinal, if mixed with oil.
