I have a son with Down syndrome.
he goes to a normal kindergarten. he is happy there and very popular.
I receive a fixed amount every month from the nursing care fund because of his developmental delay. I also get paid for my private babysitter for evenings and weekends.
Therapies and doctor visits are of course also covered.
Medicines and aids (buggies, special beds, chairs, car seats) are also paid for by the Keankenkasse if you need them.
Accompaniment for kindergarten can also be requested. (we don't need one, but just the possibility gives you a reassuring feeling)
My son has a disability. But so far I have had the feeling that our life was therefore restricted in any way. not at all.

When you said americans water-down who they are to be palatable for others? That hit me so hard.... I'm Vietnamese and it took over 20 years before i felt free to like what i like out loud. That's true freedom. I hid or cowered when school acquaintances said they saw my family's wedding in my frotnt yard.. wearing traditional clothing. Friends said my house smelled bad. I never ever talked about beef noodle soup/pho or ate fried fish or fish sauce in front of others. Vietnamese culture is so cool but i didnt want to be different as a kid. Get this- sriracha has been used by Vietnamese with their pho since the 80s! I knew a cool thing 30 years before it became mainstream!

I am definitely one of the ones who loves working while also having a sense of security. My soul craves to be in Ireland, but the realistic side of me wants to be in Germany because of the safety net Germany has for its citizens. I'm glad you learned healthy boundaries with work and are sticking to them! Dealing with the offices for official paperwork and appointments will be annoying, but everything else about Germany just seems amazing.

Also, I love hearing your opinions

hailey having a mini melt down over missing german food gave me ptsd flashbacks to when i was a kid visiting the newly build disney land paris and all they had for food in the park was fast food. i was utterly miserable and my mum tried to smuggle bananas and salads into the park so i’d have smth to eat while there xDD

That last topic - Germany is 20% American - may be true for Bavaria, but not so much for the rest of the country. 😂
The Americans' view on Germany was influenced by their soldiers being stationed in Bavaria after WWII until now. Dirndl, Oktoberfest and Bretzn... But the American presence has also worked the other way.
When I came back to Hamburg after my exchange year in California back in 1987, I couldn't find a KFC or Pizza Hut anywhere within 250 km. It had to be either West Berlin or Bavaria.
I do admit that tourism and globalisation has done it's work everywhere but no place is as "American" as Bavaria.

In Germany you are proud to have leant a job3 years or more from a master and that you know all the background of your job. In the US you are proud to have learnt all by yourself.

Hayley, go to Finland (not Helsinki, more in the north) and tell me afterwards why I felt I was in little America, when I was there. ... 😉

I live in Belgium, which is great but I wouldn't mind living in Germany, or the Netherlands.

Umm, not wanting to be a downer but yes, the USA CONSTANTLY has mass shootings as per the definition. During 2023 the USA had well over 400 mass shootings, but only the big ones were reported in the media.
That means on average more than one per day. That's pretty much the perfect definition of "constantly".
Sure, the USA is huge, so it's still not super likely to be caught up in a mass shooting. But it is still a massively bigger chance than in Europe.

You got officially germanized! There’s nothing more German than complaining about things in Germany. Have a wonderful weekend!
