Timed Up and Go (TUG)

This is a great outcome measure to use with patients throughout the care continuum and can be highly effective at tracking functional change in transfers, balance, and gait all in one measure. This is also a simple measure that is quick to perform with a lot of validation in the literature with many cutoff values to reference for multiple diagnoses.

Equipment: Chair and 10’ walkway
Time: Less than 5 minutes
Instructions: Ask your patient to stand up, walk to a marked distance (3m with tape on the floor) and turn around and sit down. They may us an assistive device and have multiple trials. Start the timer once you say go and as their buttocks hits the chair in sitting.
