It’s all fun and games until Mario says “Buh-bye-a!” and completely sabotages your stealth.

when you're doing this, every little noise you hear sounds like your parents' footsteps, so you don't know if you should start pretending to sleep or just continue playing

I'll never forget the tweet that said "strict parents don't teach their kids to behave, they just teach them how to lie better."

Strange how sometimes the most scariest experiences you have are actually from that place you call your home...

I cannot explain how terrifying this is the absolute dread I would feel pretending to sleep sometimes I’d feel like my heart would sink because of how terrifying it was.

Everyone has done this in their lives one way or another. It's like playing FNAF but with your parents, but you listen for footsteps, talking, or lights switching on. Pure horror.

I've snuck around too much as a kid, and now even though I'm 20 now I have a tendency to unconsciously move in near-silence and I've ended up startling people unintentionally a few times

I'm 100% willing to believe Mario's "buh bye!" In one of the DS games was a measure to make sure you're not staying up

The scariest thing is when you think they leave but they actually enter the room and stay to see if you start playing.

I love how moments like this unite so many of us. So relatable. I remember having to conduct literal cia level extractions as a kid when my parents would hide my electronics. I got caught more than a few times but would always somehow find a way to get it back silently at like 1am. I’d plan the whole operation in my head, and after a while I was able to get the device, use it and put it back in the same spot before I actually went to sleep and nobody knew a thing. Didn’t do my sleep schedule any good as it’s now certifiably fucked!

Mario: "Bah bye!"

Me: "I've been tricked, backstabbed... and quite possibly, bamboozled."

The scariest thing is when you have your volume on a little bit while your parent walks by, and while trying to turn down the volume, you accidentally turn it all the way up!

Tips from a retired kid:
1) You'd never have both earbuds in, only the side that's facing away from the door would have it in.
2) Don't hold your breath, sleeping people breathe too. Maybe even snore if you're normally prone to
3) Look natural, arms don't always lie neatly on the sides.
4) If you can, close your door
5) DS > Phone
6) Always assume they're standing there even after closing the door.

I remember when I was 5 years old I was wide awake in the middle of the night. Suddenly I saw this shadowy face peeking by my door and staring at me. Then suddenly it left. I thought it was just a nightmare, but years later I learned it was mom checking on me.

the fear of being caught on a device was a way scarier feeling than every scary thing combined

That moment when you try and play your DS under the covers to muffle the noise but you start getting hot and sweaty, so you just play it with the covers off and hope your parents don't hear you

I remember doing this all the time, and one time I pulled an all nighter playing on my DS until morning when dad opened the door, saw me awake playing games, and after a split second of disappointment, he went "you know this might actually be a good thing" because apparently he was going to take me to the doctor for some kind of brain scan to find out if I had epilepsy (mom has it and because of my autism there was a very high chance I might get it also) and I apparently needed to be asleep for the scan to work

You just got M64 for your ds and you give it a try at night. All goes well until you hear a patterned thumping, and after years of practice, you’re able to instantly recognize her footsteps as she closes in. Seeing as you’ve done this countless times before, you’re no stranger to this scenario. As you go to close the ds and shove it under your pillow, a loud and unexpected “bu-bye” pierces through the night’s silence. You feel your blood turn to ice as you lie petrified under the covers, praying she didn’t hear that…

BROOO I FRICKIN REMEMBER THAT!!! I'd just be playing super Mario bros on my DS and my grandma would come in every night to check on me. I didn't know about the sleep mode, so when I'd close my DS to fake sleep, Mario would just yell "Bye bye!" Grandma got me every time cause of that
