Lower extremity edema or swelling could be a symptom of underlying severe diseases like CKD, glomerulonephritis, cirrhosis of liver, congestive heart failure and many drugs and medicines could cause it too. When you have edema around yes or ankles you must see a doctor to find out what could be the possible etiology. If you know the cause than it can be treated well. Treatment involves not only treating underlining cause but limiting salt and water intake , stopping the offending drug and use of diuretics.
