Yes, nice trick. It works because there is a pattern for multiplicatives of 9. Any number that can be divided by 9 (without a remainder), will have the sum of its digits also equal to 9

Eg)
9: 9
18: 1+8 = 9
45: 4+5 = 9
99: 9+9=18: 1+8 = 9
9999: 9+9+9+9 = 36: 3+6 = 9

I just mentally did grade school long division. Grade school talents are fundamentally useful and always applicable in someone's life.

Crossing out the numbers is the same as expanding out the number like so:
720, 000, 000 + 1, 000, 001 + 504, 000 + 60, 300 + 90. All of these addends aside from 1, 000, 001 are evenly divisible by 9. This trick only works with 9 because coincidentally all the multiples of 9 have their digits add up to 9.

Simply take the addition of all digits(7+2+1+5+6+4+3+9+1), it is 38 and divide this 38 by 9 you will get remainder 2...that is the answer

The reason why teachers don't tech these short cuts is because you need to know how to do it long hand.
