That explains why my cat needs me to point things out to him 10 times, but will meow at a mystery bird invisible to me at night.

Fun fact: once something gets too close to a cats face, because of their pretty bad eyesight, it’s their whiskers that actually do the work for telling them when they should bite down. Cats also see movement the best, so even with their bad eyesight they can detect toys and critters, as long as they are moving 😊 this is likely (at least one) reason why rabbits and other prey animals freeze when they sense danger.

I think this may explain why my cats sometimes struggle finding the last treat in my hands :'D I often have to call out their names while holding my hands out until they finally find them.

The difficulty in testing cats for anything is their lack of cooperation

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe cats are just really far-sighted, their vision isn't just blurry.

Cats see pretty okay at a distance. They're long-sighted, and they also see in blue and yellow like dogs. Things within about 30-40 centimetres of their face are blurry beyond recognition.

So THATS why my cats never played with toys they got for Christmas.

Cat's eyes are also impressive for the way that they process the information that they see. I don't exactly remember the details, but they basically interpret the world in vertical slices much faster than other animals. So while their vision isn't great, their sense of motion is insane. That's the reason that they can hit a snake before it strikes them.

I saw a video where a woman who makes glasses for children keeps a cat around her office and made corrective eyewear for her cat. Apparently the cat loves it and does very well with it.

As a retired zoologist, I love this series! You do such a great job with it. Might I suggest the Mantis shrimp? 😁💙

I think cats have good distance vision, it just gets blurry for them from up close, but they make up for it with their whiskers

A bat! People always use the phrase blind as a bat, so are they actually blind?

Birds have the craziest mode of vision, they see nothing like any other animal

While housecats have poor vision wild cats have decent vision

Far away wild cat species can spot the subtle movements of small prey, but when they get too close it blurs, becuase felines are near sighted

Their slit eyes are designed to see stuff far away, so they can hunt and pick out weak prey in the herd or to see tiny movements under the leaf litter

Issue is when you use your face to nom nom stuff it's kinda inconvent to be essentially blind, which is why they have whiskers!

Did you know their whiskers can actually pick up on the heartbeat of mice? Through tiny tiny vibrations! The whiskers have suuuper sensitive nerves at the end thats how lions know when their prey has died!

I'd go for something unusual: Eyes changed quite a bit between ocean and land-dwelling creatures - and even more when mammals went back to the oceans.

So either a fish with big eyes, or maybe a dolphin's?
