Why do Logs Crack? 'Checking'

preview_player
Показать описание
"Checking" occurs when a log or timber beam cracks or splits on one side of the log. This happens because of "shrinkage' that naturally occurs with wood. As wood grows, the growth rings get farther and farther apart, so the check starts at the "heart" (center) of the log and expands outward, getting larger and larger as it goes. In the full video you'll learn about how to avoid major checking and shrinkage, and more information on the process.

Have you thought about cutting a grove to relieve the pressure of the checking and maybe helping with the making of the mortise or tenon
