I ran a 10k race on Saturday. I took 1:06 off my previous PB! With the mile warm up before the race, and then running back a mile to meet up with a friend and run her to the finish line I ended the day with about 9 miles. Race was on a cement path and my feet were hurting after, so took yesterday off, strength training today, and back to running tomorrow. Weather in Colorado will be BEAUTIFUL this week for early morning runs.

I have only had P. F. once, very painful indeed. I decided to run because I like the activity and decided to run my 1st marathon coming up this Sunday to develop a skillset of doing a difficult goal. I have bipolar disorder and running is key for me rather than depending on medication only. Good mental health is an active discipline. I have experienced many of the benefits you have listed. Thanks for the video.

Sorry to hear about the need for the boot Matt! At least it's bringing you some relief during the day! All of these benefits are true! Thanks for sharing!

I've noticed first hand most of these benefits. Fitness and weight loss are the biggest ones. I've been running for less than 2 years and I've lost over 35lbs since I started. Fitness wise I'm in the best shape of my life. Even in my 20s I would get puffed out and red faced just playing a game of badminton. Regarding it being cheap, I completely agree with your comments on this. It was exactly the same with my previous hobby of home brewing. It was cheaper than buying beer for me because I was happy with basic equipment and wasn't always chasing the shiny stainless steel equipment and all in one brewing systems. Now I've got my initial running setup costs done the ongoing ones are pretty minimal. Running is still a hell of a lot cheaper than other activities like golf and cycling for example, where I see people regularly spend thousands on just one item!!

I love the goal setting and social aspects, and one that wasn't mentioned... it's a lot easier squeezing a run into a busy schedule than many other sports. My other passion is horses... but even on a decent weather day with reasonably safe footing, (limiting factors for when I can ride) it still takes a minimum of 20 minutes before I can even start riding. (And that's when you don't have to drive to the barn.) Catching, grooming, tacking up (putting on the equipment)... and another 10 to reverse it after. That's 30 minutes without even riding! In that time I could have gotten a decent run in. And price wise... a run involves maybe $500 of equipment for me, whereas a ride involves thousands. I love them both, but running is certainly simpler, adding to its stress relieving qualities!

I feel like when you jog/run on a consistent basis, you just feel a lot more fresh and have more energy. I’m pretty sure that your metabolism speeds up too.

My favorite line in this video is "and maybe a t-shirt" -- as in "All you need is shoes, shorts and maybe a t-shirt." Among my runner friends, only Florida Matt considers shirts optional! I think I run without a shirt approximately twice per year. Not just because of cold weather but also because I mostly run in the daytime in a city, crossing city streets, where nobody wants to see a 62-year-old's bare chest! 🤣🤣 Seriously, thanks for the way your videos are always so encouraging, and the way you help us all build both motivation and discipline. In fact, intentional action to promote sustained motivation is another kind of discipline. One last thought: I love that you're going to that golf-cart overpass to grab whatever hill training is possible in Florida as you prepare for Boston. I'll be cheering for you when you toe the starting line in Boston. And also when you crush it at the finish line!

More brilliant research reported by Matt. Intelligent running videos. The best running YouTube Channel by far.

Last week I did 5 days of pool running, a 12k and 10k run, and a couple of bike rides. Each week I'm getting in over 6 hours of activity. Knee is doing great.

Great list, Matt! I enjoyed watching that. I'll take mild issue with #4, as I'm pretty sure my old friends resent me for still running when they gave it up 20 years ago; and of course I never miss an opportunity to remind them of this.😈For #7, I'm bound to be one of the cheaper runners around. As bad as shoes were when I started, I'm good wearing anything that's light with a bit of cushion. I have some Walmart sneakers that work fine. Another pretty good week here, 36 miles with some light threshold and a couple of speed days, a chilly windy rainy 8-miler Saturday morning and a sunny but 20° easy run on Sunday, spring-like the rest of the way. I hope your foot's still behaving itself. Rock on!

Hey Matt - simple video but so right on the money !! I love joining up with a group and getting motivated to run a race or improve upon a prior effort. Running can be a perfect fit for those who love routines and discipline. I also totally agree that running is a great way to explore new places and to get a good pulse on an area.

Decent week running - continuing to train for an upcoming 10k race next month. Bad weather here in VA (wind, rain) which made for challenging longer run/tempo effort this past weekend. Struggling bit with soreness in one leg from running on uneven sloped roads (crowned surfaces). Need to be careful on that. Has that ever happened to you? Trying to take it easy and get in some cross training. Take care

Great video Matt!! I’m so sorry about your plantar fascia it can be very painful. I hope it gets better for you. That’s awesome that running helps with memory and improving the Hippocampus. This past week was a recovery week. I worked this weekend in the Hospital and it’s difficult to get those long run days in. I did 34 miles this week. Thanks for sharing. Keep strong!!

Matt, hi! PF is related to the windlass mechanism, and daily Achilles and great toe extension is key to stretching the plantar aponeurosis via the windlass mechanism. Here’s an article with citations. You can ditch the boot! I’ll put the link below in separate reply because I think you need to approve it after seeing it’s not untoward content 😆. My career was in treating such maladies. Good luck!

I always feel great after a run.

I had a cold last week. So I haven't ran since last Monday almost a whole week off. I have to get out and run today. Today is my hard day. So I hope I can get it done.

Success: Friday 5k time trial 19:32. If you believe my Coros track workout function lane 2. Set back: Sat long run 18km just at the end felt soreness in calf. At 58 lesson is no long runs after a speed workout. Rested it Sun & Mon so about to test it out today. Probably shouldn't do those hill repeats but how will I know otherwise?

PF & ITBS kept me out of running for a year 😞 My sister had to give up running altogether due to chronic PF.
