How To Make a Hand-Engraved Hammer with Simple Tools

In this video I am showing how I made a simple hand engraved hammer without a forge or fancy tools. For the Hammerhead I have used a 25mm by 25mm steel bar (1” x 1”) and cherry wood for the handle, cherry is not ideal for hammer handles but it is beautiful and this hammer will get very light abuse, ideally hickory or ash wood is used.

To see how I make my gravers check my video on making an engraving starter kit:

I mean, yeah, the video IS indeed about the hammer, but no one's even gonna mention the superb ballad arrangement he made just for said hammer?!?!?

I enjoy the fact that even the tools on his bench are art pieces.
Kinda like taking apart an old watch with all the old horological engravings.

It's this kind of effort that transforms a simple hand tool into a family heirloom. It's beautifully engraved.

This video leaves me with a double feeling.
1) it inspires me to make stuff
2) it makes me want to sell all my tools because I no longer feel worthy to own them.

Making art with our tools is one thing, but making our tools art as well is something else. I love it.

I am literally in awe... the making of this without forge and with minimal use of power tools... this brings new inspiration to me. Thank you so much for doing this!

If engraving doesn't work out, you could always become a surgeon.

I have no idea why YouTube suggested this but I am glad it did - it was so satisfying to watch how a piece of metal and wood turned into a master piece!

If you heat a bucket of sand over a fire for 2 hours at <400 deg F to achieve very hot dry sand then put the head end to be inserted about 10 cm into the sand and let it dry 3-4 hours while you work. This dries the insertion end very thoroughly. When you are ready to insert you work quickly to heat the metal to 350 deg F then quickly insert the split top into the head of the hammer while still hot. Insert a wedge soaked in boiled linseed oil and let cool. As the wood cools rub multiple layers of boiled linseed oil on until room temp. As the cooling process occurs the wood will have absorbed oil and atmospheric moisture causing the wood to swell to fit perfectly and tightly. This is the last handle you will ever need to put into the head unless it is broken by careless use...which in such a finely crafted hammer would be indeed a shame. Thank you for an inspiring video. P.s...have you tried the process called ‘japanesing’ that used to be used black metal parts of some metal footed hand planes? Oh...Wranglerstar also has a great video on building a ‘Shave Horse’ specifically for easily making various wood handles etc... again, marvelous video!

Time and patience.

That was awesome. The end was unexpected but probably the best part.
