Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) performs his Prelude in G minor Op. 23 No. 5 composed in 1901, on an Ampico roll recorded on March 17, 1919 and issued as a published roll in early 1920. The style of performance is very personal to Rachmaninoff, and quite distinct from how this piece is typically performed by many today.

Here the same recorded by me in 2017 from a digitally simulated original piano roll Ampico 57525 with a modelled Grand Bllüthner

What's kind of dumb about a lot of Ampico recordings of hand played rolls is that when any sustain is supposed to be added, the pedal in engaged but the notes are also extended like crazy making massive arpeggios and drawing even more vacuum than is necessary, it's like note simulated pedal in a midi file which is ridiculous. At least the rolls sound good, Ampico and Welte crescendos really do help with that.
