Children born preterm are more likely to have challenges during their development. The Canadian Neonatal Follow-Up Network (CNFUN) collects and reports on the health of children born premature when they are 18-24 months old.

This allows for health care providers and parents to be able to plan for babies’ needs.

CNFUN has used medical definitions to classify disability based on how the child thinks, hears, sees, and uses their muscles.

Parents have never been asked how they classify disability.

In this study, we asked: do parents of preterm children and health care providers agree on how to classify disability?

Dr. Anne Synnes is a neonatologist and clinical professor. She is currently a researcher at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute.

Lindsay Richter is the National Coordinator of the Canadian Neonatal Follow-Up Network (CNFUN).
