What Percentage Of A Shape Is Shaded? (Part 1, No Calculator)

In this video you will learn how to work out the percentage of the shape that is shaded. First of all you need to write down the fraction of the shape that is shaded. On the numerator of the fraction count how many squares are shaded, and on the denominator put the total amount of squares. Next you need to make an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100, as a percentage is a number out of 100. Once the equivalent fraction has been made then the percentage shaded will be the numerator of the equivalent fraction.

In example 1, there are 20 squares altogether and 11 are shaded red. So the fraction of the shape shaded is 11/20. Next make an equivalent fraction out of 100. 20 goes into 100 5 times, so multiply the top of the fraction by 5, 11 times 5 is 55. Therefore the equivalent fraction to 11/20 is 55/100. So the percentage of the shape which is shaded is 55%.
