One of the philosophies that we have in the special operations community is “Train as You Fight.” Let’s take a look at what this means and how you can apply it to your civilian business and personal life by giving some examples, and then discussing:
Harder & Smarter
Stress Training
Rehearsals
& Putting it All Together

“The harder you train in peace the more prepared you will be in war.”

This applies to both civilian and military events and training…

A saying an old SF instructor once told me... " You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of you training'

About 15 years ago, I was in paramedic school. We had to do intubations and IVs in junkyard cars. In the classroom, we practiced lying upside down, and contorted in all different manner of positions. It was some of the best training I ever received.

This could not have come at a better time. I am helping someone prepare for ACT test for college entrance. This person is extremely nervous about it due to having graduated high school 5 years ago. My response was take as many timed practice tests as possible and with each practice test your anxiety will diminish and that will happen in proportion to your preparation.

When I first got to Group I was put on a team that trained 4 days a week. The Team Sergeant had a range scheduled every week, and sometimes we would get to a range and only had 50 live rounds a piece. Sometimes we would go to a range and train with 5-6 guys because the others were in schools. If we didn’t have rounds, we were moving through buildings on some dusty range. Running through “Driver Down” drills. We would get back smoked and beaten from the drills…… only to find out the SCUBA team went home around noon…….. then Afghanistan came around….. thank god we trained hard.

I remember some interviews with people who served in the first gulf war. They said that their training was much harder than the actual combat. Made perfect sense, if you are going to die, die in the training, not in combat.

My platoon sgt always said, “the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in war.” I like his version better than the original 😂

The hardest part is that it requires discipline to execute the train-hard plan and make it to the end.

We in the Infantry also have always adopted this philosophy.

I’m very impressed with this philosophy as I happened on this channel. I think I’ll stay awhile and learn more!

This is really good stuff. I always was one for training PT (running) with heavy kit as heavy as battle gear.

I think it was in his book "On Combat", LTC Grossman provides a great example of why "train as you fight" is so important.

In the 80's, some police forces in the US when undertaking firearms training had a department policy requiring that officers reholster their pistol after practice firing it on the gun range. This policy inadvertently drilled a muscle-memory into the police officer, whereby during any on-duty situations where the officer drew and fired their weapon, the officer would then instinctively reholster their pistol. Needless to say this wasn't tactically a good idea.

But nevertheless, the officers ended up fighting exactly as they trained.

The issue about stress thing, mostly trained people have disagreement about the matter of stress, they become hesitate and does not go all way to the end through stress environment or high stress level of training.

I cycle a lot and ride my bike to work daily. Whenever I commute, I would wear non-padded shorts and put all of the gear that I would take with me during long trips plus the backpack that I bring to work with me, so I am weighted down. In addition to that, I would only use the 3 smallest gears on my bike to make hill climbs harder. During the actual ride, I would wear the right gear and not have a backpack, and would use all of the gears that I have.

This might not be an accurate example but living in a third world country is stress training everyday with no chance of respite if you ask me. When I visited Canada back then, life was very easy for me and the inconveniences the Canadians say are just negligible for me.
EDIT: Just for context, half of my relatives are in Canada and I love the country. I was born and raised in the Philippines
