Google’s Find My Device Network on Android Is OK but Apple’s Is Better

Google's Find My Device uses an encrypted, crowdsourced network of other Android devices to help you find lost items like Bluetooth trackers, phones and headphones. But the network rollout has been slow and confusing, especially because the default settings make it harder to find your lost items. Change these settings so it works more like Apple's Find My network.

Google has to change that useless default setting to "all areas" if they want to try to compete with apple. And they have to do it fast!

Truly dumb on Google to not have fixed this up when the network was delayed for whatever reason with apple

I have both an Apple Airtag and Samsung Smart Tag 2. I will admit the airtag works a little better. When tracking it tracks while the airtag is moving while the Smart Tag does not. I can find the smart tag but it doesn't track while moving.

On the other hand I recently took a flight from California to Colorado and put both trackers in my luggage. One of my bags was left behind to take the next flight. Both trackers located my luggage in California but once my luggage was in flight to Colorado I was able to track my luggage on the plane. I was able to track it once it was flying over Utah.

Really sad to see that google is fumbling this opportunity.
I really hope they change the settings to what apple has.
Complete Support of the network or not at all and the standard being complete support.
Cause at the moment the settings are just too complicated, even though I am a complete Android Fan.
I really need a tracker for my luggage as I am travelling a lot and as a I got an android, there are not really much options.
My idea was to buy a third party tracker working with the apple find my network, so as long as i got internet i can see the tracker in the third party app on my android and track it down with that and it uses the apple network for locating, what you guys think?

If Apple and Google both make one network. it will be good for all of us.

The “for now” in the title is such a sweet optimism filled message for a company whose home work was done by Apple years ago and simply had to replicate it (because that’s what they’re best at) but still failed.
They had the already perfect thing to compare and improve their crap but still couldn’t “yet”.

Hopefully it will work better outside of the US because Android is most used in the rest of the world

Who would have thought that Google takes privacy more seriously, when apple always advertises how private an iPhone is.

Clear and concise. Good to know how default settings matter and how wide the network is. (Samsung is not as ubiquitous as Android)

Thank you for confirming what folks such as myself were going through with these android tags. They just do not work that well and it is frustrating for someone coming to Android with the Pixel 9 ProXL... my main incentive for entering into android is the AI and photo-integration... but I am questioning if it is even worth it at this point.

Why have Samsung and Tile suddenly disappeared from these tracker comparisons?

are there any updates on improvements? i don't recall anything mentioned in the pixel event. that's quite disappointing.

Apple sells less phones globally than samsung. There is comparison videos where the samsung tracker performs better. And it will certainly perform MUCH better if you travel to some place where people can not afford iphones. Samsung has a higher market share than Apple, so this reviewer is only biased towards Samsung and Android because she is clearly an iPhone user. "Market share in the entire world during the first quarter 2024, Samsung had 20.8% to Apple's 17.3%." and: "Samsung shipped 3bn smartphones in 10 years, 33% more than Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei"

Why are you pretending Samsung smart tag 2 doesn't exist? It has worked great for months and has uwb.

I lost my phone this week. It took me to an address yesterday. I searched for 6 hours. I went back this morning. It took me to my phone in the road precisely. It was perfect and had no problems. So lucky 🎉🎉🎉

When Google enables tracking features by default, people complain about privacy. When Google gives users the option to opt in, users complain about why "find my device" has few devices joined to the network. It is not easy to be Google. LOL.
