A 2010 Ford Explorer Limited comes into our shop today. Customer stated the transmission is slipping at times, shifting rough at times, and sometimes working appropriately. Customer also stated the issues arise generally after the vehicle is warmed up or after driving highway speeds.

What are we doing today?

What are we using to complete the work?
Custom snap ring pliers as well as the kit containing new snap rings, O-rings, and both the OD and IM servo. We will also be using some sil-glyde along with common hand tools such as a 13mm non-ratcheting wrench.

Do you have any concerns about today's work?
No concerns installing the kit. We are curious to see if the kit resolves the issues the customer has been experiencing.

Why did you decide to do this?
Customer stated they took this Explorer to the dealership where they originally purchased the vehicle. The dealership reported back to the customer that everything appeared in good working order, no rough shifting was experienced during their test drive and with no engine codes present, they would need to wait for a time when the issue could be recreated or an engine code was revealed.

Upon this news, customer asked if we would take a look at the vehicle and more specifically, if we would be willing to simply install this Servo Bore Fix Kit produced by AJ1E Superior Solutions, LLC. We agreed to complete the work for the customer.

What transmissions are affected by this issue?

What's your favorite thing about working in the shop?
In this specific case, our favorite part of this job is assisting our customer while hoping it resolves the issue they have been experiencing with their vehicle.

What would you improve, if anything?
If there was a difficulty score or rating for this work, it would be very low as indicated by the producers of the servo bore fix kit. If I was asked about the difficulty of completing this work without a lift, I would say 2.5 out of 5, simply because of the tight spaces and the potential fits the snap rings and servos can throw when attempting the change. On the other hand, I also believe that we would be much more time efficient after completing this work one time. We certainly are now familiar with the INs and OUTs of this job.

Any additional thoughts?
Yes, if you are completing installation of this Ford Servo Bore Fix, please refer to and utilize the step by step instructions and instructional videos on the AJ1E Superior Solutions, LLC web site.

What's coming to the shop in the future?
A 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD with an active P0299 Turbo Under Boost code. This fix isn't straight forward for sure and we hope you'll join us for that shop adventure.

Are you able to do lots of work in a limited space?
Yes, without question. The biggest issues I face in our 2 stall garage is organization. Keeping the workspace organized and both stalls clear of clutter really helps with motivation, which then helps with productivity. Basically, if I see a clean workspace, I'm much more ready to dive into a project or even just scheduled maintenance like today's oil change.

Top notch video. Excellent explanation and good steady camera work. You are appreciated in sharing both your expertise and your time to make this. Ordering the part today, hopefully I can find a good shop to help me with the install.

I installed these into my 2008 explorer V6 XLT around 50K miles and it's still going strong . I'm at 201K miles same transmission.

I have one of these 07 Explorers that definitely has shifting issues, been looking for this info for a while now, thanks so much for posting up the video and esp the fix solution link.

Incidentally my issue is primarily with the OD gear not setting firmly in the 45-55 mph range, if I use the manual OD lockout it seems to fix the issue for the most part in that speed range, as it will stay in OD pretty well going 60 mph and above. It seems to slip and not shift down properly anymore when getting in that mid highway speed range. Also my Explorer (v8 Sport Trac Limited) only has about 85k miles on it so this problem doesn't really have to be "high mileage" related.

Hey Man, Great work with your video!!! I have a 2004 Explorer with the 5R55S, and the problem is that the gear slips from
2-3rd, and it would delay going into reverse, we bought a used transmission and again we got the same problem 4 months after it, I researched and found out about this servo bore issue and decided to buy it, today. I'm crossing my fingers this will fix my problem. I do get OD light on my dashboard when the transmission is slipping to much.

You won't see any wear on the servos. They are hardened steel! The problem is that the servo rods wear out the aluminium (aka aluminum) housing!

my 2010 explorer is having a similar issue I think, mostly happens in higher gears but around 1500 rpm if I get on the gas it jerks and kicks around then if you give it enough gas it downshifts, it also happens at other rpms if I really give it the beans it feels like it downshifts multiple times then the rpm kinda flutters instead of steadily gaining and it kicks as well, I got the car with 90k miles, fluid was never changed and Im not changing it now, im at 130k, Had a similar issue about 10k miles ago with misfiring but turned out to be my ignition coil on 3 and 4, however now im getting no codes, zero lights nothin

Great video wish you were local, 1 novice question, why would you need to back the band adjustor out 1and 1/2 turns to adjust or tighten the bands?

Hello, 2005 Lincoln Aviator. Hard shift at 1-2 gear and no OD. I ordered the OD servo kit from the same company.
I have a lot of mechanical experience but since I work constantly I called around to a few shops to get this done. 4 out of 5 shops refused to take the job. The one that did had a 4 week work order. And the repair for labor wasn't cheap.
What did you charge for the job??
Also another YouTuber used a bottle jack to push the servo in due to what he stated was a strong spring.
Seems all you had to do was slightly spin the servo til it falls in correct???
I have many more questions but Ill save them. I am going to do the job myself. At least that way I know it was done right.

Hi, I have an 06 ford explorer with a 4.0 V6 engine. The Transmission was recently worked on because all the gears stopped engaging
After the work on the transmission, the wrench signal is still showing and only gears 1 and 4 and reverse only are engaging. Gears 2, 3 and 5 do not engage at all.

Did you need to drill the servo bore housing to get to the deeper snap ring or no?

I want to replace the servo bores and do the band adjustments myself, but don't want to bother if the bands are broken internally. Is there a way to know if they're busted without removing the whole transmission?
