If you are having trouble transferring files from your smartphone to your desktop computer PC due to an Error Copying File or Folder message that says, "A device attached to the system is not functioning", then first try this easy solution. There are many other troubleshooting solutions to try which can be time consuming and a hassle so refer to those only if the easiest and simplest solution doesn't work first!

It's easy to think all USB C cables are the same but some are certified for certain devices and smartphones. It is possible to get them mixed up and use a USB C cable that isn't right for your device. Since it's quite easy to have a lot of USB C cables laying around, you could easily get them mixed up and be using one that is causing this transferring error.

I hope this helps anyone out there. It bugged me for a couple days until I realized a simple switch using a different USB C cable fixed it completely!

OMG... It was that simple. I have been transferring files for years from my phone to PC and never came across this error until now. I did a search but people were saying its a phone setting or i need to download an app or other rubbish. I saw this video and your suggestion worked. I never thought it would be such a simple problem. I don't know what has changed except i now own more expensive cables. I tried it with a cheap cable and it worked. So the dearer data cables aren't so great after all. Thanks buddy :-)

Always try the easiest and simplest solution before spending time and hassle on the other troubleshooting steps. I had issues transferring files from my smartphone to my PC due to an error message (for large files only, as small files transferred fine), was due to the usb cable I was using. While it still works, it wasn't able to transfer larger files.

Occam's Razor strikes again! It worked! The funny thing was it was some random charging cable that worked, while the "high quality" one was the finicky one.

None of these worked for me. What did work was switching to 'photo transfer' in the 'use USB for' option in notifications. Hope this helps you if the above solution doesn't.
