9 years later and you are still out here saving engineering students. Godspeed.

in the United States, a moment going in counter clockwise is positive. It’s different in other nations.

Thanks a lot. Had problems with moments but this gave a very useful basic understanding. I have c1 and m1 tomorrow. My problems im m1 are Moments (now better) and vectors with bearing.

Do I take the force in the opposite direction of where the reading is taken from

I think the sign of the torque is opposite because 10N*7 must be positive since the Z-axis is out of the page and it's considered positive not negative.

I am currently revising for my physics exam (unit 2) This helped quite a bit. The one topic I cant get my head around! Have created any advanced videos for this at all? Thank you TrevorB

Hey, dude!
I need to contend you have a great content, but I can't just understand why you consider the counterclockwise moment as a negative one! It must be a positive one, albeit the clockwise is a negative!
You confused me too much!

I heard someone talking about taking moments and I didn't know what they were talking about so that's how I landed here. My particular area is biology so I don't get into a whole lot of physics, beyond the basic stuff, so forgive me if this seems like a dumb question but why is the force at R considered a clockwise force since the direction of the force will always be straight up independent of the position of the lever, or is that just a way of saying it's a positive force, which does have an affect on the other forces in the equation?

But I did the math and the last problem was supposed to be -14n
